Babylon Burning: Introduction
In the space of a very short time America has experienced one calamity after another that has shocked her citizens and stunned the world. On a single day in September of 2001 the tallest towers in her most populous city were destroyed with the loss of thousands of lives. On this same day the Pentagon was struck with the loss of hundreds of more lives, and four airliners from United and American airlines were destroyed with the loss of all passengers and crew members. America had not recovered from the devastation of these events when she was met with another setback as the space shuttle Columbia broke apart upon reentry.
An amazing parallel is seen to these events and a great number of Scriptures that speak of God pouring forth judgment on a proud and sinful people. Nowhere is the parallel seen more clearly than in the following passage of Scripture:
Isaiah 2:12-16
For Yahweh of hosts will have a day of reckoning against everyone who is proud and lofty and against everyone who is lifted up, that he may be abased... Against every high tower, against every fortified wall, against all the ships of Tarshish and against all the beautiful craft.
The World Trade Towers were America's proudest towers, representing her great stature in world trade. The Pentagon is a symbol of America's military which stands as a fortified wall protecting her land and her people. The Pentagon had even recently gone through a major renovation where reinforced steel and concrete walls were added on her exterior to make her safe against attack. The Pentagon had fortified walls, yet they were not strong enough to resist that which occurred on 9-11. The space shuttle Columbia was a beautiful craft, even a space craft. It spoke of America's great technical achievements, her science and breadth of exploration.
Each one of these things stood as a symbol of some aspect of America; her economic might and world trade, her military strength, her technology. Each of these things were touched by a sudden disaster from which America is yet to fully recover. These things were all judgments from God, as well as being warnings of worse things to come.
Yahweh has sought to get the attention of a nation that has used her liberty, her ease, and her great comfort to pursue a course of wicked sensuality, arrogance and pride. For a brief moment it seemed as if America might repent and humble herself before God, but it was not to be. Instead she began to make great boasts of rising from the ashes of destruction and taking war to all her enemies, declaring that she would choose the time and the place of their destruction. Churches that were filled for a brief moment with alarmed citizens have now been emptied, for the people found no answer and no direction from an apostate and sleeping church.
America has boasted that she will rise from the ashes like the mythical Phoenix, even naming the rebuilding project of the Pentagon "Project Phoenix". Yet God has sent more signs that America will not arise as she has boasted. In August of 2003 the city of Phoenix, America's sixth largest city, experienced her own panic as a third of her gasoline supply was cut-off due to a ruptured pipeline. Prices for fuel soared, gas stations closed, people spent hours in line often to find that the tanks had run dry right before they could fuel their cars and trucks. This was one more sign of what is coming for this nation. (See the chapter " How America Will Fall" for a fuller explanation.)
At the same time, in August of 2003, spectacular signs were seen in the heavens as Mars made its closest approach in 60,000 years. The planet Mars is considered a harbinger of war, and she is circled by her twin moons Phobos and Deimos whose names speak of fear and panic. These are just a few of the signs God has been giving to America to warn her of what is to come. What she has experienced so far, tragic as it has been, is minuscule in comparison to what lies ahead if she will not repent.
Yet repentance seems far from the mind of Americans. In the past three years since 9-11-2001 depravity and wickedness have escalated at an alarming pace. It is as if America's citizens have cast away all restraint in a pursuit of hedonistic pleasure. The courts and the government have also thumbed their noses at God. Homosexual marriages are now sanctioned, the ten commandments have been removed from courthouses, sexual deviance and promiscuity are rampant, television has taken quantum leaps into more sexually explicit content and vulgarity, as has the music industry and film. Even the most hideous type of abortion, partial birth abortion, which was momentarily banned, is now being made legal again by the courts and by the pressure applied by that wicked organization called Planned Parenthood.
As the citizens of America consider their excesses in these areas to be triumphs of freedom and liberty, they are soon to discover that their liberty will be the cause of their judgment and tremendous sorrow. The World Trade Towers were on the corner of Liberty Street and Church Street, and it is due to the abuse of liberty and the slumber of the church that her judgment comes.
Recently there have been more signs of judgment as America uses a pursuit of liberty as a defense to pursue greater wickedness. The highest mountain in Washington State (a state named after the first president of America), is Mount Ranier. Twice in the last month very similar stories of tragedies occurring on this mountain have been in the news. The facts of the stories are symbolic.
Date 6-03-2004
MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK, Washington (AP) -- One of two climbers stranded on Mount Rainier died Thursday before the other was plucked from the mountain by a helicopter, officials said.
The climber, Jon Cahill, had died by the time a party of five rangers reached the two, who were stranded at 11,300 feet, said Mount Rainier National Park spokesman Barry Fraissinet.
His partner, Mark H. Anderson, had a wrist injury and was evacuated by an Oregon National Guard chopper, said Guard spokeswoman Kay Fristad...
Cahill fell early Thursday as the pair tried to ascend Liberty Ridge, one of the most difficult routes up the 14,410-foot peak, according to Fraissinet. The accident happened about 1,000 feet below where a climber was fatally injured in a fall last month...
On May 15 on the same ridge, climber Peter Cooley tumbled down a steep, icy slope and hit his head on a rock spur. His climbing partner, Scott Richards, maneuvered the two of them to a tiny flat spot, but the Maine men were stranded for two days as temperatures dipped below freezing in whiteout conditions.
Cooley, 39, was picked up by a National Guard helicopter May 17 but died on the way to a hospital. Accompanied by two rangers, Richards hiked down to a glacier the following day and was picked up by a helicopter.
In the space of two weeks two different pairs of men sought to scale Liberty Ridge, one of the most difficult routes up the mountain. In both instances a sudden fall occurred resulting in the death of one of the men. In coming days America will also experience a great fall and some will perish while some survive. Yet even among the survivors not all will escape injury. What is the answer to the peril that lies ahead? Do not carelessly misuse your liberty.
Zephaniah 2:3
Seek righteousness, seek humility. Perhaps you will be hidden in the day of Yahweh's anger.
The following chapters are arranged approximately in the order in which they were written in response to prophetic signs occurring. Many of these signs were extremely profound, yet even so many ministers have spoken publicly telling the saints to not interpret these things as signs of judgment. Many false messengers have lulled the church back to sleep, and have opened the door for a greater flood of wickedness. When judgment comes it will begin at the house of God, and woe to those who have failed to sound the trumpet of alarm.
Ezekiel 33:6
"But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet and the people are not warned, and a sword comes and takes a person from them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood I will require from the watchman's hand."
In the following writings the trumpet is being blown. May it make a distinct sound, and may those with ears to hear, hear.
