Black Oil Anointing
Joseph Herrin (10-1-02)
What is the connection between America and oil? What is the tie-in between the father and son Presidents George H. And George W. Bush, and Middle East wars that are centered around oil producing nations? What is the significance of so many top government officials in the current Presidential administration having ties to major oil companies? Is there a prophetic message in all of this?
These are a few of the questions I began to ask myself over a year ago, and as I did the Spirit began to reveal some amazing connections that I could not dismiss as mere coincidence. At the time, what the Spirit was revealing was so extraordinary and unusual that I hesitated to write anything upon this matter until I saw things much clearer. Yesterday, prompted by a question from a friend, I picked up this writing once more, and as I did the Spirit began to bring new revelations that bring a much greater cohesiveness to the picture that was forming before me. I would like to submit these things for the judgment of the saints that they might also seek the mind of Yahweh on these topics and bring forth even greater light.
What the Spirit has been revealing to me is that the entire struggle over control of the oil resources of the Middle East is a struggle over anointing. Anointing is an awesome thing, and the world desires to have an anointing as surely as the saints, and often the world will go to even greater lengths to secure this anointing.
The anointing is power!
It is evident that a person can have a dream, or a vision of some great work, they can have lofty goals and aspirations, but all of these things will come to nought unless one also has an anointing to accomplish that which they feel called unto. Consider the role of anointing in scripture. Whenever Yahweh chose to set someone aside to accomplish a specific task, He anointed that person. Oil was the symbolic substance that represented this endowment of power. Oil symbolizes power as it is used to provide light and create heat. Oil was a key source of power for the ancient world, even as it is today.
When Yahweh chose to enable a man to be able to stand in a specific calling and to fulfill that calling, He placed His anointing upon that man, and this empowerment by God was visibly declared to those around by pouring forth oil upon the head of the man. In this way we see Aaron having the anointing oil poured over his head as he is set aside to fulfill the office of the High Priest. We see the anointing oil being poured over Saul as he is set apart to be the first king of Israel. We see David being anointed on three separate occasions, which symbolize his calling as prophet, priest and king.
The following scripture is included here because it speaks of this anointing oil being used to symbolize Yahweh’s empowerment of man to perform a specific task, and this particular scripture is chosen for it reveals a number and variety of anointings.
I Kings 19:15-17
15 Yahweh said to [Elijah], "Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus, and when you have arrived, you shall anoint Hazael king over Aram;
16 and Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint king over Israel; and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place.
17 "It shall come about, the one who escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu shall put to death, and the one who escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha shall put to death.”
Here we see that God has chosen three men to accomplish very specific tasks that He desires to accomplish through them. Yahweh seeks to purge Israel of its idolatry and to remove the wickedness of the house of Ahab and Jezebel from before Him. At this time, none of these men had come into their calling. They may have had aspirations, but they had no power to accomplish their desire. Only by receiving the empowerment of God, the anointing to fulfill their calling, could they go forth in power and succeed. After Elijah anointed Hazael, he became king of Aram. After Elijah anointed Jehu, he became king of Israel. After Elijah anointed Elisha, he became prophet in his place.
The anointing represents the power to accomplish a particular work. As saints we relate anointing to the Holy Spirit, for the Spirit of God is seen throughout scripture coming upon a person and changing them into another person where they do great exploits. John the Baptist came preaching in the power of the Spirit, and Christ began the most remarkable ministry the world has ever seen after the Holy Spirit came upon Him.
The Spirit, and the anointing of the Spirit is represented by oil throughout scripture. The Middle Court of the Temple represents the church age that began at Pentecost when the Spirit came upon the 120 gathered awaiting the promise of the Spirit. Notice Christ’s words, for they are important, “but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you...” (Acts 1:8). A connection is clearly seen between the anointing of the Spirit and power. I will include some other scriptures to reinforce this correlation, so you can see this matter clearly.
Micah 3:8
On the other hand I am filled with power -- with the Spirit of Yahweh...
Luke 1:17
"It is he who will go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah...”
Luke 1:35
The angel answered and said to [Mary], "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you...”
Luke 4:14
And Yahshua returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit...
Romans 15:13
Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
I Corinthians 2:4
and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power...
This is just a sampling of the scriptures that relate the Spirit and power together. I could likewise cite many verses that relate the Spirit and anointing and oil together.
Acts 10:38
"You know of Yahshua of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power...”
I John 2:20
But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know.
I John 2:27
As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.
To confirm that it is the Spirit that is being spoken of as the “anointing” that “teaches you about all things”, I will include the following verse:
John 14:26
"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.”
I will give one final verse that conclusively relates the Spirit and anointing together.
Luke 4:18
"THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME, BECAUSE HE ANOINTED ME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR...”
We see in these verses that an anointing is given by Yahweh to accomplish a specific task, and though the anointing is outwardly symbolized by oil being poured over the person, it is the Spirit of Yahweh that is the true anointing. As Yahshua was anointed “with the Holy Spirit and with power”, so are men and women today anointed to accomplish the will of the Father.
To see a man or woman bearing an anointing from Yahweh is an awesome thing to behold. To see frail and weak vessels being used in power is simply stunning. A lost and wicked world covets such power, and desires to gain this anointing that they too might have power.
Acts 8:18-20
18 Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was bestowed through the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money,
19 saying, "Give this power to me as well, so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit."
20 But Peter said to him, "May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money!”
Sadly, the power and anointing of the early church quickly waned, and the church has gone through a long, dark night where powerfully anointed men and women have been rarely seen. Yet a day is soon to come when even greater works will be done than those accomplished by the early saints in Christ. The former and latter rains of the Spirit will be poured out together and the glory of God will arise in vessels of clay that have sanctified themselves for the Master’s use. Once more we will have saints who will testify as did Paul:
Romans 15:18-19
18 For I will not presume to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me, resulting in the obedience of the Gentiles by word and deed,
19 in the power of signs and wonders, in the power of the Spirit; so that from Jerusalem and round about as far as Illyricum I have fully preached the gospel of Christ.
I Corinthians 2:4-5
4 and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,
5 so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God.
I Corinthians 4:19-20
19 But I will come to you soon, if the Lord wills, and I shall find out, not the words of those who are arrogant but their power.
20 For the kingdom of God does not consist in words but in power.
I Thessalonians 1:5
For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction; just as you know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake.
Are you content with the lack of power in the church today? The church today typifies the last days that Paul spoke to Timothy of, where men would hold to a form of godliness, but deny the power thereof. How my soul cries out for the power of God to be restored to His sanctified vessels. How weak and lowly and shameful the church has become in the eyes of the world until the church now goes to the world to be healed physically, mentally and spiritually. Oh saints, our hearts should be breaking over the impotence that has gripped the people of God.
You may ask, how does this all relate to the Middle East and America and the events of this hour? Though much of the church may have become content with powerlessness, the world craves power. Even as Simon tried to purchase the power he saw resting upon Peter, so the world looks for power wherever it can find it. The world has found that the power of God is not for sale, though there be many wicked servants in the household of God who would gladly sell and market the meager anointing they possess. Since the world cannot get power from the church it will seek this power from other sources. In a hideous twist we see that the Great Harlot, the fallen church who has no power of her own due to her wickedness and disobedience, ends up riding on the back of the dragon, revealing that she will ultimately derive her power from the world that is ruled by the dragon.
Since the world cannot purchase the true anointing of God’s Spirit, the world is seeking an alternate anointing. Herein we see a great contrast. Throughout scripture it has been a very specific type of oil that represents the anointing of Yahweh. The Israelites were instructed to use only the oil that comes from the olive to light the lamps in the temple and to be used as the holy anointing oil. This oil was extracted by taking ripe olives and pressing them, or beating them until the oil came forth from the flesh of the olive.
Exodus 27:20
"And you shall charge the sons of Israel, that they bring you clear oil of beaten olives for the light, to make a lamp burn continually.”
When we consider this verse in the light of the following scripture, we begin to see an amazing picture:
Romans 11:24
For if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these who are the natural branches be grafted into their own olive tree?
The saints of Yahweh are pictured in scripture as an olive tree, and it is from the crushed fruit of the olive tree that the oil of anointing comes forth. When our soul life has been crushed by God the oil of anointing is manifested and we become a light unto the world. Consider also that Christ’s greatest suffering was at Gethsemane where it states that His soul was grieved unto death. Gethsemane was a garden on the Mount of Olives and it literally means “olive press”.
In all of this we see God’s plan for man to attain to all that He desires for him. We have an anointing of the Holy Spirit that produces the life of Christ within these vessels of clay, but that life is only manifested when our soul life is crushed, when we die to our own way of doing things. We must fall on the Rock and be broken to pieces in order that the anointing within might be manifested. If we are not pressed and beaten as the olive, if our flesh remains protected and intact, then the oil of anointing will not come forth. We are called to be broken vessels before God, that He might reveal His power in and through us.
The world, however, has it’s counterfeit anointing. The world, and the majority of the church, do not want to be broken before God. They therefore seek an anointing that does not require the work of the cross in their lives. In Exodus we read that the oil that God required was “clear oil” from the ripe flesh of the olive. The lost world has a substitute. It is the black oil called petroleum that comes from the decaying matter buried within the earth. I trust you can see the symbolism in this.
The true saints of God will settle for nothing less than the clear oil that comes from flesh that has been crushed, but the world is satisfied with the oil that comes from decaying matter that is brought up from the depths of the earth.
A further revelation comes forth as we answer the following question. Who do we most associate with oil today? It is the Arabs, the offspring of Ishmael. Ishmael was a product of the flesh. He was born when Sarah and Abraham began to doubt the power of God. Ishmael was born of Hagar, who was an Egyptian. Egypt is symbolic of the world, and the scriptures speak of “the fleshpots of Egypt.” Ishmael was born out of man’s attempt to fulfill the promises and purposes of Yahweh. Ishmael came forth, not by the power and anointing of Yahweh, but by the false anointing offered by the world that is typified in Hagar. When Sarah was barren, lacking the power to accomplish God’s will, Hagar was seen as fertile. In her was pictured the power of the world to accomplish the purposes of God.
What a picture it is today that the descendants of Hagar through Ishmael are occupying largely barren lands that sit on top of vast oil reserves. The anointing of the world does not bring forth life. Hagar may have given birth to Ishmael, giving Abraham a son, but Yahweh rejected Ishmael. Even so, the works of the flesh may have an outward appearance of life and blessing, but in God’s eyes they are as barren as the deserts of Arabia.
The world, however, not being able to purchase the power of God, have sought to exploit Satan’s alternative. Not desiring to have their flesh crushed, to bring forth the pure clear oil of the Spirit, they have settled for the black oil of Ishmael. Is it not symbolic that olive oil today is graded as virgin and extra virgin olive oil, yet petroleum is associated with the term “crude oil.” In Revelation the 144,000 who are overcomers are portrayed as virgins. They have a devotion to Christ alone, and they follow the Lamb wherever He goes. We know the Lamb went to the cross, and so must the overcomers. Yet the world offers an alternative dredged up from the depths of the earth. A black oil that puts off many pollutants and chokes the cities of man with noxious vapors.
The word petroleum comes from two words: ‘petra’ which means rock, and ‘oleum’ which means oil. The word petroleum literally means “rock oil”. The scriptures reveal that Christ is the Rock that brings forth life. Christ is the rock in whom all power and authority dwell. ‘Christ’ literally means ‘anointed one’. He is the Rock from which the oil flows, for He sent the Spirit into the world. He is the answer for all of man’s needs. He is the true source of power and light and life. Yet Satan has his counterfeit source of power and light. He offers men petroleum, rock oil, in place of the true Rock and the true anointing.
This prepares us now to answer the questions that were posed at the opening of this writing. How does all this relate to current events and the struggles in the Middle East? The rock oil that the Arab’s possess is used to accomplish all the desire of man. The Arab oil is a source of great power, and the world would grind to a halt without it, for the peoples and nations of the world depend on it to perform all their works. The governments and industries of the world are heavily dependent upon this source of power. It is the anointing oil, the source of power, that they need to accomplish all of their purposes.
The U.S. is no different than the rest of the world, and is greatly dependent upon this counterfeit anointing to accomplish it’s plans and schemes. America is not powered by the anointing of the Holy Spirit, it’s power and might is of the earth. It is earthy. The U.S. (And the rest of the world) have not heeded the words of scripture:
Zechariah 4:6
Then he said to me, "This is the word of Yahweh to Zerubbabel saying, "Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,' says Yahweh of hosts.”
America is the greatest single nation on earth in it’s industry and labor. Yet it is all dependent upon a black oil anointing. America runs on petroleum. Why is President Bush interested in Iraq? For the same reason his father was interested in Kuwait. Black oil! Power to accomplish the purposes of man. Consider the following facts about some of the major figures in America’s government:
President George W. Bush: He owned Arbusto Oil prior to running for President. (Arbusto is ‘bush’ in Spanish) His company was literally named “Bush Oil”. Many prophets have spoken of this president being a burning bush, but this burning bush is fueled by a counterfeit anointing oil.
Vice President Dick Cheney: Was a Director of Halliburton Company, the world’s second largest manufacturer of equipment for the oil industry.
National Security Adviser Condoleeza Rice: Was a Director of Chevron Oil Corporation, and even had an oil supertanker named after her. This tanker was renamed after she became an aide to the current president to quell any controversy that might arise from those who felt her oil ties were a conflict of interest.
Secretary of State Colin Powell: Led the war in the Gulf, Desert Storm, to free Kuwait from Iraq and restore the flow of oil to the U.S.
Notice a pattern here? Our nation craves this anointing that comes from the earth for it is a source of great power. If the U.S. were to have it’s supply of oil threatened it’s power would be in jeopardy. Therefore, the U.S. will do everything it can to insure that it can keep a steady flow of oil coming to it. America has chosen the false power that this world offers. It has turned it’s back on the true anointing that comes from brokenness and humility before Yahweh. It has turned it’s back on Yahshua, the Rock from which the true power and anointing flows.
The focus on the Middle East is all about who controls the black anointing oil of Ishmael. America wants the oil to flow to her borders that she might have power to accomplish all of her desire. There are some who do not want America to have this power. Others also want this power. Wars are fought over such things. An anointing is a powerful thing and when money will no longer purchase it, then the kingdoms of the world will suffer violence and violent men will take by force that which they desire.
The question is, “Do the saints yearn for the true anointing as desperately as the world seeks the counterfeit?” The anointing will only come to broken vessels who have fallen on the Rock, which is Christ, the Anointed One. When the saints are broken an anointing will flow from them that will eclipse that which the world has sought for a substitute. Great darkness is surely not far off, and the Father is seeking a people upon whom He can place His true anointing.
Isaiah 60:1-3
1 "Arise, shine; for your light has come,
And the glory of Yahweh has risen upon you.
2 "For behold, darkness will cover the earth
And deep darkness the peoples;
But Yahweh will rise upon you
And His glory will appear upon you.
3 "Nations will come to your light,
And kings to the brightness of your rising.”
